چکیده

At the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), scatterometer data from the ERS 1/2 platforms have been successfully assimilated between January 1996 up to an ERS-2 on-board failure in January 2001. This surface vector wind product over the global oceans had proven to give a positive impact on the ECMWF forecast skill in general, and the analysis of tropical cyclones in specific. On 21 August 2003 ERS-2 scatterometer data was publicly re-distributed by ESA. Off-line experiments performed at ECMWF, confirmed a positive impact, where the wind product was based on the improved geophysical model function CMOD5. Scatterometer data from ERS-2 were re-introduced in the ECMWF operational assimilation system on 9 March 2004.

The Advanced Scatterometer (ascat) on the Metop Satellites: an Operational Follow-on to Esa Ers C-band Scatterometers

The Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT) on METOP is a follow-on to the wind mode of the Active Microwave Instruments on ERS-1 & 2. The prime objective of the instrument is to measure the wind field at the ocean surface. ASCAT is a real aperture C-band radar with high radiometric resolution and stability. The beam geometry, radar frequency and vertical polarisation are the same as for the ERS scatter...

Mesoscale winds from the new ASCAT scatterometer

Introduction satellite based scatterometers provide high resolution all-weather wind vector fields over the seas. Wind speed and wind direction are provided at high accuracy under all weather conditions. The allweather EsA ERs scatterometer observations have proven its significant impact for the forecasting of fast developing and severe weather. Moreover, scatterometer wind fields are provided ...

Soil Moisture Products from C-band Scatterometers: from Ers-1/2 to Metop

Based on ERS-1/2 scatterometer data from 1992 to 2000, work carried out at the Institute of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (Vienna University of Technology) resulted in a multi-year, global, remotely sensed soil moisture dataset. An exciting aspect of these developments is that the ERS scatterometer instrument finds an operational continuation in ASCAT, the Advanced Scatterometer onboard the...

Development and Implementation of a Discrete Global Grid System for Soil Moisture Retrieval Using the Metop Ascat Scatterometer

RESUME Over the last years, the Institute of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (I.P.F., Vienna University of Technology) has been putting in practice the retrieval of soil moisture from ERS scatterometer data. Anticipating the operational and partly near-real time creation of soil moisture products based on the existent ERS methods applied to the upcoming ASCAT scatterometer data, we evaluate t...

Timely Ers Scatterometer Winds for Weather Nowcasting

With the loss of the on-board ERS-2 tape recorders, ESA swiftly developed a new strategy for on-ground data acquisition. Rather than 14 ERS-2 data acquisitions per day, the acquisition rate has more than tripled, allowing data coverage in the North Atlantic and adjacent seas. Acquisition rate and coverage are still increasing. ESA processes all acquisitions independently, allowing user data acc...
